THE ULTIMATE UNIMOG - ENGINEERED BY HELLGETH
Arguably, a Unimog is one of the most recognisable truck shapes in the world and has gained cult status over its more than 75 year history as powerhouse amongst utilitarian vehicles.

In our niche, a Unimog based expedition truck is as much a lifestyle statement as it is a testimony of appreciating the extreme capabilities of the ‘UNIversal-MOtor-Gerät’.

Some people refer affectionately to their Unimog simply as ‘Mog’, ‘Möggli’ … we are sure you heard more variations, and the #unimoglove hashtag on social media counts thousands of entries. Mercedes-Benz even dedicates social media accounts for an enthusiastic and ever growing audience, take a look and become a part of #unimogcommunity.

In 2020, KRUG EXPEDITION ushered in the next phase of building the ultimate Unimog expedition truck with Germany based Hellgeth Engineering, and we would like to take you on a ride into the realms of this unique Thüringen based specialty-truck construction company.

Hellgeth is run by brothers Andreas Hellgeth, the project manager, and Jürgen Hellgeth, the engineer. Both have decades of know-how under their belt and could be dubbed as the ultimate Unimog experts.

Another instrumental person at Hellgeth is Jörg Bareuther.
He is a true legend in the community, someone who largely might not need an introduction.

We were lucky to do a quick Q+A with Jörg about his coming of age at Hellgeth and the latest around all things Unimog expedition trucks.
— Jörg, how did you become involved in truck modification builds in the first place?
— Picture a classic scenario - I had one built myself. In 2009 I purchased a Unimog from Hellgeth, and self-built the habitat. I was on the road with it for a few years and then rebuilt it from scratch. Afterwards it just so happened that I joined the Hellgeth team. In total, I have lived in the vehicle permanently for seven years and this experience is now the basis of my daily business.
— What makes a Unimog such a great base for an expedition truck?
— This is difficult to pack into a few lines. It is the most off-road capable vehicle in my opinion, with an ingenious construction consisting of a twistable vehicle frame, portal axles, tire pressure control systems and all-wheel drive and locks that can be activated while driving.

A Unimog is extremely reliable and manoeuvrable, and much smaller in size than any other truck. The turning circle is sensationally small and the coil springs on the front and rear axles in conjunction with disc brakes allow the Unimog to perform very well. The new U 4023 series has a mid-engine that further improves weight distribution. The automated manual transmission also makes long transit routes a pleasure.

Anyone who has blasted 80-90 km/h, relaxed, down a washboard road knows what I'm talking about. At the latest then you are convinced and would never dream of giving it back
— If you could sum up our joint efforts to build the Hellgeth Unimog with a KRUG EXPEDITION module, what would you say?
— KRUG EXPEDITION really understood and took care of the weight issue and it was a very pleasant development phase. Both sides have incorporated their know-how to the highest standards.

We have succeeded in building a premium ready-to-travel expedition vehicle that that embodies a perfect balance between vehicle performance and living comfort.

There is also a configuration as a true 7.49 ton truck. And all this in a standardised program, which results in very short delivery times and a fair price. And to be honest, it also looks damn good because all the proportions are perfect.
— How does your process look like from order to delivery, and how long does it take?
— Our Unimog product has a name: ”TenereX”.
Anyone who would like to own a TenereX should contact Hellgeth or KRUG EXPEDITION.

As next step, your chassis is ordered and we will finalise all the details around the habitat on paper.

From the moment your Unimog chassis arrives at Hellgeth, we turn it into an expedition vehicle. This is a process that involves several modifications and upgrades and it takes around two-three months.

The module is produced by KRUG EXPEDITION during the same time-frame. Then the marriage of chassis and module takes place, and after a final fine-tuning, your brand-new TenereX expedition truck is ready.

Overall you can estimate eight to ten months from order to delivery before you can drive off into your forever freedom.
— What would you consider the ultimate expedition trip one could make with a Hellgeth Unimog?
— Everyone has a different vision what they would like to see in the world.

For me personally, the American continent is and remains my favourite travel destination. Although I can't decide between North America and South America. It’s such a concentrated load of spectacular environments with sheer endless off-road opportunities for beginners to absolute professionals I spent less than ten times on a campsite in around three years.
The Americas offer it all, there is nothing more you’d want.
Thank you Jörg for sharing these insights with us, we can’t wait to continue the TenereX journey together!
