Surrender to a lifetime of memories
AlphaLimaTango Expeditions is an adventurous Swiss family of four traveling the world. Let them take you along a breathtaking journey to the Outer Hebrides, and be sure to be thrilled with exceptional, hauntingly beautiful views of Scotland that make you ache to go explore this part of the world, too.

— Chris, please tell us a bit more about yourself, and what sparked your interest in independent travel.
— I always liked traveling, exploring and overlanding. During our five years as expats in the UAE, we bought two Land Rover Defenders and ventured into the mountains of Oman and the desert ‘Rub al-Khali’ almost every weekend and certainly during vacation time.
—Was the Outer Hebrides journey one of your biggest yet?
— In the Middle East, we drove for weeks through the desert without seeing any other human being. During our eight years in Asia, we also travelled extensively. However, one of our most recent drives took us through the Sahara with our expedition truck. The Outer Hebrides was therefore not our biggest expedition to date, but certainly a very memorable one, also due to its fantastic landscape, fauna and flora.
— Why did you choose this destination?
— We love Scotland the mainland and the isles. Having covered the Inner Hebrides and the Cairngorms (a Scottish Highland) last year, we definitely wanted to explore the Western Isles.
— How did you prepare for the trip?
— We read a lot of travel guides to the Hebrides and used Google Earth to plan this adventure.
Of course you would pack different clothing for the north of Scotland than you do for when you drive through the Sahara. Other than that: fill the tanks and the fridge, buckle up the kids and just drive.
— Was there anything specifically you wanted your children to experience?
My kids are growing up always traveling and moving around. They love it if a plane or the expedition truck starts jiggling or when it gets bumpy.

Plus, they enjoy meeting children from different backgrounds and cultures.

Usually rather sooner than later, the question comes around: ‘where are we going next, Daddy’?
— What were the best parts?
In the Hebrides, we truly enjoyed the many untouched beaches. Since you can camp where you find a suitable spot, we were usually looking for a lonely campsite and avoided usual camp grounds, with the exception of dumping and refilling.
You can’t fight these islands, you have to go with their flow.
But if you surrender yourself to them … your focus changes from a preoccupation with problems to a realisation of everything else on offer. From the beauty of the beaches and cliffs, to an appreciation to a very different way of life.
— Would you do anything different now with the knowledge you have from this experience?
We have so many other destinations on our travel bucket list. We will however come back to the Outer Isles as they touched our hearts and our souls in a really profound way.
If putting Scotland on your travel bucket list seems like a great idea, and the thought of visiting the Outer Hebrides even more so, maybe start your internet research here and make sure to follow @alphalimatango_expeditions on instagram.
